Hm… Das hier ist mein erster Versuch so was wie ein Show Review – wie sagt man auf Deutsch? "Konzert-Rückblick"? – zu schreiben… Also, bitte habt etwas Geduld mit mir… Zuerst die Set List. (Dafür gibt’s nun endgültig kein vernünftiges deutsches Wort mehr, oder?) Aber lasst mich etwas früher anfangen… Wir – Kathrin, Vince und ich – fuhren nachmittags los, um unseren Rustie-Freund Uwe aka Computer age zusammen mit den anderen Rusties beim Pre-Show-Fest in Frankfurt gegen 5 Uhr zu treffen… Das Rustie-Treffen fand bekanntlich im Café im Hof nur knapp 3 Minuten entfernt vom Veranstaltungsort Alte Oper statt… Wir kamen – nach einem Zwischenstopp bei McDonalds im Frankfurter Bahnhof – gegen 6 an. Viele Rusties, viel an Kameras und Aufnahmezeugs… Uwe erwartete, Neil würde Opera Star spielen, wegen der Oper… Na ja, Opera Star spielte er nicht. Aber was für wunderbare Überraschungen sollten wir erleben!!! Das Konzert begann mit leichter Verspätung… Aber das ist ja normal… Die Bühne war weitestgehend dunkel, nur wenige Lichter, und natürlich einige Kerzen. Links das Klavier, die Orgel ein Stück im Hintergrund auf der linken Seite, rechts der große Flügel und in der Mitte die Akustikgitarren – und das Megaphon! Nach einigen Runden Applaus, um ihn auf die Bühne "herauszuklatschen", kam Neil schließlich, setzte sich in die Mitte, murmelte ein "Danke", nahm eine der Gitarren und begann das erste Stück Falling From Above, vorher als Love And Affection bekannt gewesen, zu spielen. Neil sah ziemlich gut aus, gesund und "jung", seine Stimme war in guter Verfassung und sein Gitarrenspiel unglaublich intensiv. Neil brachte den kompletten ersten Teil – GREENDALE – genau so wie wir ihn von anderen Besprechungen voriger Shows dieser Tour kennen. Er redete und erzählte und scherzte viel zwischen den Songs… Oft spielte er auf der Gitarre, während er noch redete, um dann nahtlos in den Song überzugehen… Es war so was von beeindruckend… so "cool" und gleichzeitig so "warm"(-herzig)… Neil blieb während des kompletten ersten Teils auf seinem Stuhl sitzen, nur für Grandpa’s Dinner (was ein regelrechtes Requiem ist) stand er auf, um zur Orgel zu gehen… Während der letzten beiden Songs von Greendale kam dann auch das Megaphon zum Einsatz, was für Vince das Amüsanteste am ganzen Abend war! (Vince ist 5! Wahrscheinlich der jüngste Rustie, der in Frankfurt dabei war…) Mir gefielen die Megaphon-Teile auch sehr, sie passen zu den Songs verdammt gut… Alles in allem muss ich sagen, nachdem ich GREENDALE live auf der Bühne miterlebt habe, zähle ich es mit zum Besten, was Neil je gemacht hat. Aber das ist nur meine völlig unmaßgebliche Meinung… Dann die Pause. Tief beeindruckt von GREENDALE warteten wir jetzt auf den "Oldie"-Teil der Show, gespannt, welche Überraschungen Neil uns an diesem Abend präsentieren würde… Er kam zurück und spielte Lotta Love und Comes A Time, was nicht allzu überraschend war. Dessen ungeachtet: nette Versionen, etwas schneller und kürzer als aus der Vergangenheit gewöhnt. Speziell als er Comes A Time begann, stellte Vince sofort fest, dass es anders klang als auf LIVE RUST… Dann die erste große Überraschung. Neil stand auf und schien etwas unschlüssig, wo er hingehen sollte… An den großen Flügel? Nein, zur Orgel… Jemand aus dem Publikum hatte "Stringman!" gerufen, aber was Neil auf der Orgel spielte, war Long May You Run. Einfach großartig. Ich liebe diesen Song, und ich liebe wirklich die Orgel-Version. Nachdem er geendet hatte, ging Neil zum großen Flügel. Was würde jetzt kommen? Ich erwartete Expecting To Fly. Und er spielte – Birds! Wundervoll… Und dann… Immer noch am großen Flügel… Die ersten Noten… Und ich wusste… ich konnte es nicht glauben!!! – DANGERBIRD!!! Was für eine wunder-wunderbare Killer-Version… Nie hätte ich gedacht, dieses Lied könnte solo-akustisch am großen Flügel so großartig klingen… Nach diesen Riesenüberraschungen kehrte Neil wieder zu dem bereits bekannten Programm zurück mit sehr, sehr innigen Versionen von Old Man (vielleicht hatte ihn Bob Dylan inspiriert, diesen Song so zu spielen? – erinnerte mich teilweise an Bobs Version von letztem Jahr…) und Don’t Let It Bring You Down (einem meiner liebsten Songs aller Zeiten). Dann die zwei wundervollen Klavierstücke Only Love Can Break Your Heart und After The Gold Rush – und dann viel zu früh schon das Ende des regulären Sets mit einem wahrhaft intensiven War Of Man… Stehende Ovationen, und dann eine wirklich gute Version von Heart Of Gold. Auf Wiedersehen, und weg war er… *Seufz* Oh, ich wünschte, ich könnte diese Show noch einmal durchleben… Nie hätte ich gedacht, ich könnte Neil solo-akustisch so sehr genießen! Was kann ich sonst noch sagen? Seine Stimme und sein Gesang waren so gut… Je älter er wird, desto besser… Und dasselbe gilt für sein Gitarrenspiel… Er brachte einige wirklich "raue" akustische Versionen seiner älteren Songs. Manche sagten, er hätte viele falsche Noten gespielt. Ich sage, es war so was wie RAGGED GLORY ("zerbeulte Glorie"?) akustisch! Schräge, verwackelte Versionen von Songs, die er geradezu wieder neu erfand, während er sie darbot! So, jetzt halt ich meinen Mund… DANKE, NEIL! – Oh, wie ich diesen Mann liebe… Andreas aka "you're all just pissin in the wind" aka "Dangerbird" And here the translation – thank you Andreas!!!! Okay, I'll start this one... But, where to begin? Hum... This is my first attempt to write a show review or something like that... So please be patient with me... First, the set list. But let me start a little earlier... We -- Kathrin, Vince and me -- started off in the afternoon to meet our rusted friend Uwe aka Computer age in Frankfurt at 5 pm... There was a meeting of some Rusties in the yard of a small bar just 3 minutes away from the venue -- the Alte Oper (which means Old Opera) in Frankfurt… We arrived -- after a short intermission at McDonald's at the Frankfurt Station -- by 6 pm. Lots of Rusties, lots of cameras and recording stuff... Uwe suggested Neil would play Opera Star because of the venue... Well, he didn't play Opera Star. But what wonderful surprises were to come up!!! The show started a wee bit belated... But that's a normal thing as we know... The stage was rather dark, only a few lites and of course some candles. On the left the piano, the pump organ a bit in the background on the left side, on the right the grand piano and in the middle three acoustic guitars and the megaphone! After some applause to finally bring him out on stage Neil came out, sat down, mumbled a "thank ya", took one of the guitars and went into Falling From Above, formerly known as Love And Affection. Neil looked pretty good, healthy and "young", his voice was in good shape and his guitar playing unbelievable intense. Neil went through the complete first set -- GREENDALE -- in the same way we know from other reviews from former shows of this tour. Much talking and telling and joking in between the songs... Playing guitar while still talking, then starting to sing... It was so impressive... so "cool" and so "warm"(-hearted) at the same time... Neil was sitting on his chair during the whole first set, he only stood up to walk to the pump organ for Grandpa's Dinner (which is a real requiem)... During the last two songs of Greendale he also used the megaphone which was the most pleasant thing for Vince! I did enjoy the megaphone parts too, fits the songs very well... All in all, after having heard and seen GREENDALE live on stage, I must say it's some of the best works Neil's ever done. In my very humble opinion... Intermission. Now, deeply impressed by GREENDALE, we were waiting for the "oldies" part of the show, just to see what surprises Neil might bring up this night... He came back and played Lotta Love and Comes A Time which was not too surprising. Nice versions though, a little faster and shorter than in the past. Especially when he started playin' Comes A Time, Vince immediately stated that it sounded different than on LIVE RUST... Then the first big surprise. Neil stood up and seemed to wonder where to go to... The grand piano? No, the pump organ... Someone in the audience had yelled "Stringman!", but what Neil played was Long May You Run on pump organ. Just great. I love that song, and I really love the pump organ version. After finishing that one he walked to the grand piano. What was to come now? I expected Expecting To Fly. And he played -- Birds! Wonderful... And then... Still on the grand piano... The first notes... And I knew... I couldn’t believe it!!! -- DANGER BIRD!!! What a wonder-wonderful killer version... Never would have thought that song could sound so great solo acoustic on piano... After these heavy surprises Neil returned to the former known program with very, very intense versions of Old Man (maybe Bob Dylan had inspired him to do that song so? reminded me partly of Bob's version from last year...) and Don't Let It Bring You Down (one of my all time faves). Then the two wonderful piano songs Only Love Can Break Your Heart and After The Gold Rush -- and then far too soon the last song of the "regular" set, an truly intense War Of Man... Standing ovations, and a real real good version of Heart Of Gold. Good Bye, and off... *Sigh* Well, I wished I could relive this show again... Never would have thought I could enjoy Neil solo acoustic that much! What else can I say? His voice and singing were so good, it's gettin' better and better the older he gets... And so is his guitar playin'... He did some "rough" acoustic versions of his older songs. Some said he played a lot of false notes. I say, it was some kind of RAGGED GLORY acoustic! Shaky shaggy versions of songs that he reinvented while performing them! So, I shut the fuck up now.... THANK YOU NEIL! -- Oh, how I love that man...
